Boulder Weekly
Boulder County’s only independently owned newspaper, Boulder Weekly is dedicated to illuminating truth, advancing justice and protecting the First Amendment through ethical, no-holds-barred journalism and thought-provoking opinion writing.
As the Graphic Designer for the Boulder Weekly, my role is broken up into three main objectives. 60% of my time is spent either: building advertisements or reviewing & approving business submitted ads for the weekly paper. 30% is spent on updating or creating marketing collateral for our sales team. The final 10% is used illustrating or designing covers for our special edition papers as well as our weekly issues when needed.
Advertisements
A majority of my day-to-day at the paper is spent on advertisements. It is my responsibility to take business submitted assets and create ads that: are eye catching, include all necessary information, stick to unique brand guidelines and achieve their advertisement goals. I am also responsible for reviewing and approving all business submitted ads. This comes down to verifying the ad is the right dimensions for the slot it was booked under and if it is not the correct size, collaborating with both internal and external clients to ensure deliverables across all platforms are ADA compliant and completed before strict weekly deadlines.

Marketing Collateral
Created and updated innovative and impactful marketing materials to help convert sales with new & existing advertisers. Maintained high standards for concise and clear communication to multiple audiences. Organized and refined processes for all collateral in an easily accessible file system for team use.
Here are some of the marketing materials I have produced while at the Weekly.

Special Edition Covers
My favorite projects for the Weekly are our Special Issue covers. I am an artist first and foremost, so these projects give me a chance to flex my eye for design with my love for illustration. These covers focus on promoting strong and unique design identity within the Boulder community.

Weekly Paper Covers
Occasionally, on high workload weeks for the editorial staff, I will pick up cover duties to help reduce workload for the team. A successful cover comes from fielding feedback and leveraging collaboration among team members to effectively distill and communicate broad strokes of a headlining story into a succinct and meaningful design.
